Lovingly referred to by locals as "Mount Adorable" or "Someplace Special", here you will find a friendly, colorful mix of culture surprisingly right in the middle of everything Florida has to offer. Only 45 minutes from Orlando and a little over an hour to the Atlantic Coast, you could easily venture over for the day or make a weekend of it because there's plenty to do and a plethora of local restaurants to partake in.
Standing out as a unique destination in Central Florida, Mount Dora is far from the typical beach and theme park scenes. Sitting at roughly 184 feet above sea level, (which is considered high for the Sunshine State) this little town offers a refreshing change with its inviting ambiance, scenic lakes, lively festivals, and a thriving arts scene. Whether you are a local looking for a weekend escape or a visitor seeking an authentic Old Florida experience, Mount Dora delivers a blend of natural beauty and cultural richness that few places can match.

Mount Dora’s location near several lakes, most notably Lake Dora as part of the Harris Chain of Lakes, gives it a peaceful, scenic backdrop that invites outdoor enthusiasts to explore. The area's topography offers gentle hills and viewpoints that are rare in Florida’s generally flat landscape. This adds to the town’s quiet magic and provides pleasant walking trails, picnic spots, and outdoor dining options. For example, Palm Island Park and Gilbert Park right beside the Mount Dora Marina are favorites for families and couples alike, offering green spaces, trails, playgrounds, and picnic areas with lake views.
The waterfront parks and marinas present ample opportunities for boating, fishing, and kayaking. You can rent a kayak/paddle board or take a leisurely boat tour to enjoy the calm waters, learn local history, and spot native wildlife. Honestly, one of my favorite things to do was take a boat ride through the Dora Canal, a true Old Florida experience with prehistoric vibes that gives me goosebumps to this day. Truly a must-see!

In fact, Mount Dora’s dining scene reflects its small-town quaintness combined with creative culinary offerings from all over the world. You’ll find a variety of restaurants, from cozy cafes and coffee shops, to elegant bistros, many featuring locally sourced ingredients.
Popular spots include restaurants with outdoor seating overlooking the lake, perfect for enjoying Florida’s weather. Many eateries also offer locally brewed craft beers and wines from nearby vineyards, adding to the authentic experience. Don’t miss the chance to try these favorites:
Pisces Rising served as our nightly happy hour sunset ritual, I'd wager there's no better place to watch the sun make its descent and enjoy live music on the deck! Can't go wrong with their shrimp & grits and many other delicious treats/specials!
Copacubana is a family-owned, tucked away gem with lively music, where one can find an authentic Cuban sandwich, plantains, and they were also voted as having the best mojitos in town!
Frog and Monkey Restaurant & Pub features one of my favorite ambiances (think of the show Cheers) with delicious burgers, fish 'n' chips, and definitely get the french onion soup! For weekend night owls or tapas seekers, try their other establishment, The Funky Monkey on the upper level of the Renaissance Building, best ramen I've ever had!
The Salted Fry provides casual and delicious Gluten Free options, like their poutine!
The Goblin Market & Lounge is an enchanting dining experience where you feel as if you're in the home of a friend with book lined walls and a lovely upstairs lounge offering cocktails and conversation. The cuisine is always scrumptious in this steadfast and local favorite.
The Yardery offers another perspective of the lake and lighthouse, where you can let the kids play and gather at this outdoor two story establishment that always provides activities and great eats for the whole family.
1921 was our preferred occasional date night choice with an ever-changing menu of unique takes on farm-to-table ingredients and craft drinks.
Jeremiah's is where all the local's go for a full menu of hearty dishes and consistent service. There's plenty of indoor/outdoor seating and tv's to enjoy sports and camaraderie.
PizzAmore for your fresh, go-to pizza cravings.
Newest spot: Salt & Ember for an elegant night of mouthwatering seafood and a plethora of options in a refurbished intimate space.
*Now nightlife is not necessarily plentiful here, save for a couple local haunts like the Funky Monkey mentioned above. Be prepared to plan dinner before 9pm just in case as a lot of the town closes down for the evening.

Strolling through Mount Dora’s historic downtown reveals a treasure trove of quaint shops and galleries. The inviting streets are lined with boutiques selling antiques, handmade jewelry, vintage clothing, and unique gifts. Most shops are family-owned and have been part of the community for decades. Art lovers will appreciate the numerous galleries showcasing local painters, sculptors, and photographers. The town supports its creative community with regular art walks and studio tours, giving visitors a chance to meet artists and see their work up close.
Just outside of town is the world renowned Renninger's Flea Market & Antique Center, a sprawling compound full of anything and everything for everyone with huge events throughout the year, like the Extravaganza, I've never seen anything like it. Mostly, we love to take a leisurely Saturday morning ramble through the maze of vendors and see what treasures are to be found while scoring a satchel of veggies.
There's also a truly one-of-a-kind experience to be found at locally and woman-owned Crafted Scent Bar where you can learn to create your own signature scent in the likes of candles, wax melts, and more! Great for gifting, team building, date nights, or a day with the gal's, your senses will love and appreciate this memorable activity for years to come!

Lakeside Inn is in the heart of downtown, where you can easily walk to everything and right on the shore of Lake Dora. You'll want to dine on the grand porch and/or have a poolside cocktail as the sun goes down after an eventful day of sightseeing. Known as the oldest continuously operating hotel in the state of Florida, you can certainly feel an appreciation for yesteryear on these beautiful grounds.
Hampton Inn for those who are brand loyal and appreciate consistency, you can sojourn at this convenient option along 441 and reach everything Mount Dora has to offer. It's also right across from Mount Dora Country Club Golf Course, for those so inclined.

While meandering the rolling streets, you will inevitably find yourself gazing down the path toward the calm waters of Lake Dora and something beckons you to explore. Maybe it's the gentle light shimmering through the Spanish Moss that hangs longingly from the beautiful oak tree lined alleyways.
