Whenever chatting about favorite places to visit, I must say that San Diego resides near the top of my list for a plethora of reasons. So much so, I've seriously contemplated moving there, now bear with me as I gush and tell you why. (Don't worry, I've done my best to shorten/keep this article brief but there's so much to cover!)

With its sun-kissed beaches and vibrant culture, "America's Finest City" is a destination that effortlessly blends relaxation and adventure. Whether you’re a foodie, a nature lover, or a sports enthusiast, this southern California metropolis has something for everyone. San Diego’s mild Mediterranean-ish climate means perfect weather almost all year long. No matter if you’re visiting in the peak of summer or escaping winter blues, you’ll always find sun-filled days with cool coastal breezes.

Outdoor activities abound like kayaking through the La Jolla (pronounced La-hoya 😅) Caves, whale watching tours, taking a scenic hike at Torrey Pines, visiting the famous San Diego Zoo, SeaWorld, and Balboa Park, or sailing along the bay for a refreshing perspective of the city, you'll likely find it difficult to fit everything into one visit. Not to mention the chic shopping and understated luxury on tap for those who love a refined yet casual experience as San Diego offers a mix of both high-end boutiques and curated local shops. Once it's time to refuel, the culinary scene captures the southern Cali "SoCal" vibe with a mix of fresh, locally sourced ingredients and flavors inspired by its proximity to the Pacific Ocean and Mexico. The myriad of choices are virtually endless and that is why San Diego's broad appeal will check all the boxes for your next getaway.

During my trips I learned San Diego’s charm lies in its ability to cater to both thrill-seekers and those looking to unwind. How many places can you think of where one can enjoy the bustling city life in the morning and spend the rest of the day staring out at the ocean on a quiet beach only to be rewarded even further with a spectacular sunset? Not to mention, for such a vast city, it is very easy to navigate around, which is a far cry from the traffic congestion of cities like Los Angeles. Generously gifting us with such a diverse menu of things-to-do, San Diego is an enduring dream destination that even locals genuinely smile to themselves about too.

In this guide, we’ll explore where to stay, throw in a few day trips, and even catch an MLB game! So, buckle up and enjoy this journey through San Diego! ☀️

San Diego is where effortless opulence meets laid-back coastal charm, from its iconic oceanfront views to its refined yet relaxed lifestyle, each neighborhood offers a unique vibe, and deciding where to lay your head is essential. In our case, work conferences initially compelled our visit and what a great choice for an event location because there are ample opportunities to explore a multitude of activities which will appeal to literally anyone. So if you’re craving sun-drenched beaches, world-class dining, or a serene escape from the everyday hustle, this SoCal gem has you covered and will make you want to come back for more.

Gaslamp Quarter is the heartbeat of downtown San Diego. Known for its Victorian architecture, this lively area is filled with restaurants, bars, live music, clubs, and shops. It's an extensive entertainment district which is perfect if you enjoy nightlife and being in the center of the action. Consider staying at Hotel Indigo San Diego- Gaslamp Quarter where you could end up with a view of Petco Park to see the Padres play from the comfort of your room! Alternatively, check out The Granger Hotel, built in 1904, which renders a sense of history in an elegantly artistic way that is reflected throughout this eclectic district.

Convention Center Hotels

Towering on each side of the massive San Diego Convention Center, choose from:

Hilton San Diego Bayfront- only steps to Petco Park and Gaslamp Quarter, you can't go wrong with six onsite dining venues, a luxurious spa, water activities, and shuttles to the beach.

Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina- a family friendly hotel with an expansive pool, dining, fitness center, spa, and various adventure opportunities, conveniently located so you can browse the beautiful boats in the marina on a nice stroll over to Seaport Village shops and restaurants.

Coronado

Just across the bay from downtown San Diego, Coronado offers a peaceful, upscale retreat with timeless appeal. Known for its iconic Hotel del Coronado, pristine beaches, and small-town charm, this "island" (technically a peninsula) blends laid-back luxury with rich history. Visitors can stroll or bike along the scenic waterfront, explore boutique shops and cafes on Orange Avenue, or simply unwind on the wide, glittering sands of Coronado Beach. With postcard views of the San Diego skyline and a slower pace, Coronado is a must-visit for travelers seeking a taste of classic California glamour. Even if you don't stay in Coronado, it's definitely worth a trip across the bay. You can easily hop on a ferry and experience the best views of the city!

San Diego is also home to several U.S. Navy facilities including the United States Pacific Fleet with over 50 Navy ships. The USS Midway Museum, a former aircraft carrier, offers a variety of exhibits for all ages and self-guided audio tours providing a perfect blend of history and culture.

Mission Beach

For the quintessential beach vibe, San Diego’s Mission Beach is ideal. Only 20 minutes from downtown, with its boardwalk, amusement park, and an abundance of beach activities, there's never a dull moment. Stay at the Ocean Park Inn, which sits right on the beach, making it easy to step out and hit the waves.

If you prefer a more laid-back atmosphere with stunning ocean views, La Jolla, often dubbed the "Jewel of San Diego" is the place to be. Known for its rugged coastline, upscale shopping, and art galleries, this shoreside enclave offers serene beachside walks, sea caves, and luxury oceanfront hotels.

For a luxurious feel, try the pricey but renowned La Valencia Hotel. The "Pink Lady" is an icon of vintage style and glamour where you can relish culinary delights amongst panoramic scenery.

At the very least, come to La Jolla just for the day...

Morning: Explore the Tide Pools

Start your day at La Jolla Cove with a stroll along the coastline where the scenery is incredible. We timed our visit perfectly and got to see hundreds of Pacific harbor seals and California sea lions frolicking in their natural habitat. Early morning is the best time to observe the tide pools and spot marine life like starfish, sea urchins, and a variety of birds. Just note that as the day wears on, the smell becomes a tad unpleasant from their festive play and daytime eating activities. 🦭

Kayaking and Snorkeling

Grab a kayak for a group tour or rent one separately. You'll be able to paddle alongside sea lions and explore the sea caves. If you’re feeling adventurous, consider snorkeling at La Jolla Underwater Park. This marine sanctuary is home to a variety of fish and vibrant marine life.

Lunch Time

After your adventure, it's time to refuel and you will find no shortage of options here, most sporting waterfront views and all delectable offerings. During our visit, we were craving sushi and found just what we were looking for at Blue Ocean/Harumama. Seated in a spacious booth by glorious spanning windows, we looked out over the Pacific Ocean and watched the seals lazing the day away below on the beach. Don't forget to leave time for browsing the unique shops on Prospect Street in the Village as well!

Evening: Sunset Views and Departure

Finish off your day in La Jolla with a sunset walk along the beaches. The golden hues against the Pacific Ocean create an idyllic scene. As you start to head back, remember to stop by the La Jolla Sea Caves to capture some memorable photographs!

Balboa Park is one of San Diego’s most iconic attractions, offering a mix of culture, nature, and history. Owing much of its beauty and legacy to visionary women who were civic leaders advocating for public spaces and education. In the early 1900s, women like Kate Sessions, the "Mother of Balboa Park," and members of the San Diego Women's Club led major efforts to shape the park's gardens, architecture, and cultural spaces. Their leadership during the 1915 Panama-California Exposition helped transform the park into a vibrant hub for art, nature, and community events that continue to inspire today. Little Italy

Oh, we mustn't forget that Little Italy is another must-see thriving neighborhood full of authentic eateries, art, and piazzas that will make you feel as if you've stumbled into an Italian village.

A Day at the Races in Del Mar

Try your luck at the historic Del Mar Racetrack! In 1937, with the help of one of the founders, Hollywood legend, Bing Crosby, Del Mar became a popular destination for celebrities and racing enthusiasts. The racetrack's slogan, "Where the Turf Meets the Surf," reflects its unique coastal location, offering summer and fall race seasons which attract crowds dressed in their finest, with themed events, concerts, and food festivals. Arrive early to explore the grounds, grab a drink trackside, and stay for the beautiful sunset! You can also watch simulcasting at Surfside Race Place or enjoy delicious southern California eats at Brigantine Seafood & Oyster Bar with a view of the track. Be sure to check the schedule for live seasonal racing and events.

Catch a Padres Game

If your trip happens to coincide with baseball season, attending a San Diego Padres game is a must! Located at Petco Park in the heart of downtown, it’s an experience for sports fans and newcomers alike.

Getting Tickets

Tickets for a Padres game can be purchased online or at the park. Whether you want to sit close to the action or opt for a more aerial view, the stadium has seating options for every budget. Don’t forget to check if they offer any promotions on specific days!

Pre-Game Vibes

Before the game starts, explore East Village and Gaslamp Quarter, both packed with various restaurants and bars. Grab a bite or enjoy a cold drink.

Inside Petco Park

Once inside the park, immerse yourself in the electric atmosphere. The unique design of Petco Park integrates the surrounding buildings, providing a stunning view of the skyline. Keep an eye out for the Padres’ mascot, the Swinging Friar, as he roams the stadium!

Don’t forget to indulge in local ballpark favorites like the famous Carne Asada fries or a California burrito. The experience of enjoying a game while munching on great local eats encapsulates the San Diego spirit.

Post-Game Fun

After the final pitch, East Village nightlife will be waiting. Head back to one of the nearby bars to grab a nightcap and discuss the game’s highlights. Whether you cheered for a win or a loss, connecting with fellow fans over drinks is a perfect way to end the day!

Day Trip to Tijuana

How about a quick jaunt across the border to Tijuana, Mexico? This spirited city is rich in culture, gastronomy, and a unique spirit you won't want to miss. You can take a vehicle, (Uber or Lyft), but we found the train to be the best mode of transportation for us. Only 45 minute ride with a few stops, totally worth it for easy access.

Crossing the Border

The easiest way to cross the border is via the San Ysidro Port of Entry. Depending on the time of day, the wait can vary. In my research, I garnered that Tuesday's tend to be the calmest day, with early morning as usually the best time to cross to avoid long lines. We experienced no issue going in, only a guard standing post, and as soon as we stepped foot into Mexico, our phones immediately alerted to possible service fees for International usage. So we turned them to airplane mode just in case.

Entrance sign reading "Bienvenidos Tijuana B.C. Mexico." People with luggage walk beneath. Background has trucks and parked cars.

Morning: Mercado Hidalgo

Once you’re through, head to Mercado Hidalgo. This market is bustling with local vendors selling everything from fresh produce to handmade crafts. It’s a great place to pick up souvenirs or sample some deliciously fresh tacos right from a vendor.

Afternoon: Cultural Exploration

Make your way to the Centro Histórico. The architecture is beautiful, and the atmosphere is energetic. Don't miss the Museo de la Ciudad to learn about Tijuana’s history and culture. If you’re up for it, the Cultural Center offers art exhibitions and an amazing view of the city from above.

Tequila or Wine Tasting

There are many options for sampling local flavors with Premium Valle de Guadalupe Wine and Food Tour coming highly recommended. One could even extend your stay at El Cielo Resort to enjoy beautiful winery views.

Returning to San Diego

Upon our return, we stood in line for around 45 minutes through customs and answered a few questions then headed back to San Diego with delightful memories and new experiences. We felt safe throughout our time in Mexico but as always, remember to stay alert and be aware of your surroundings.

(Please note: Our trip was prior the current border issues so be mindful of any new regulations that may be in place.)

Final Thoughts

San Diego is more than just a city- it’s a lifestyle. I tell ya, the only thing that kept me from moving there, obviously besides being too far from loved ones, is the excessive cost of everything from gas to dining but that's realistic for most major cities. Ultimately, this is the perfect year-round escape that truly provides a treasure trove of experiences just waiting to be discovered. Whether you’re sipping on an oceanfront cocktail, exploring boutique-lined streets, or taking in a sunset over the Pacific, every moment feels effortlessly elevated. If you’re looking to soak up some authentic SoCal vibes, San Diego certainly checks all the boxes and I can't wait to go back! You simply cannot go wrong there with it being the perfect weather, scenery, attractions, and charming towns worth exploring.

So, what are you waiting for? Pack your bags, plan your San Diego travel adventure, and immerse in all the sun and fun this city has to offer! 💫
